( root+ t morphème) stem+ am u = uapatam u If the base form of the word has been formed from a base to which non-grammatical morphemes have been added, and if this “enhanced” root is now a base that can take grammatical markings, it is a stem: ĮXAMPLES OF VERB FORMATIONS ( root+ m morphème) stem+ eu = uapameu So, how can they be distinguished from one another? If the base form of the word cannot be broken down into smaller pieces and still carries meaning, it is a root. They both form the base of a word and carry the meaning of the word, and grammatical morphemes can be added to both. It’s the core that gives the meaning of the word, for example minush in niminush im or akush- in tshitakushi n, uapam- in uapam eu, and so on, while the morphemes that are added give additional types of information, mostly grammatical. Nouns, pronouns, demonstratives, and verbs are variable.Įach word is made up of a stable part (the core of the word, which either never changes or changes very little) and the variable parts that can be added to it, which are called morphemes. n- and -au are the inflections of the verb with the stem uapam. ni- and -im in the word niminushim are inflections, and minush is the noun stem. A variable word is made up of two parts: a part that is stable, or that doesn’t usually change, which we call the stem, and a part that changes (the inflections that are added). In Innu, variable words are words that take grammatical markings, or inflections. All stems are bases but not all bases are stems.Minush, akushu and uapameu are variable words. All roots are bases but not all bases are roots. The stem is the part to which the last affix is added and the affix is usually inflectional. The base is the part of the word that can accept any affix. You see DRIVER being the part that the last inflectional affix is added? That’s the stem. DRIVE is the root and adding ER derives a new word but adding S to the word does not derive something new. The STEM is that part to which the last affix is added and this is usually an inflectional affix. It is the word in the last stage before an inflectional affix is added. This is because the branches don’t have much meaning. The branches are the last to be added, right? If you cut these branches off, the tree would still be what it is. that’s simple enough to grasp, I believe. It is also the base for FORTUNATE and FORTUNATE is the base of FORTUNATELY because it can accept an affix or modification and FORTUNATELY is the base to UNFORTUNATELY. For example, in the word UNFORTUNATELY, we have UN-FORTUNE-ATE+LY. Therefore, the base, by definition, is that part of the word to which any affix can be added. So, the base is that part that can accept the growth of any tree. The base is the level ground that a tree can grow on. Clear, right? Look at UNSATISFACTORILY for example. It is this word that you begin to modify to have other words. The root is the free morpheme of the word. The word starts growing from the root.īy definition, the root is that part of the word that remains when every other part is removed because it carries the core meaning of the word. It is the part that serves as the foundation to the whole word, the pillar every other thing stands on. It is that part of the word that brings about different forms. When a seed is planted, it starts growing from the ground, from the root. Look at the diagram below before we proceed to explanations.įor the tree, the root is that part sunk deep into the earth. First off, the three terms work together. So, our knowledge of the words will also be viewed from the point of a tree. They are familiar, right? These are words associated with a tree. We wanted something gritty, something closer to the metal – just as we are. We all got fed up with amazingly brushed up presentations by visual aficionados that had just one too many inspiring butterfly or beautiful sunset. We all got bored to tears by corporate presentations that had more bullets than the showdown in a Western movie. They were a disruption, they were fresh, they were different. This, to me, was the reason presenters used them in technical presentations in the first place. Of course this is a metaphor for how the very society that he and his collaborators saw all around them at the time could eventually turn out, but Lucas, at this stage anyway, wasn't anywhere near as patronising a filmmaker as he would become. Certainly most similar future-yarns made after THX would boldly state this up front, or at least heavily imply … and it is to George Lucas' credit that he simply doesn't give any explanation at all. It would have been horribly easy to have claimed that the story of one of these human drones, Robert Duvall's THX 1138, slowly awakening to this sham of an existence and fighting for his freedom, was set after some sort of nuclear war. We find ourselves in a vast subterranean environment populated by shaven-headed humans in white smocks and governed by imposing, yet inordinately polite robot policemen. Nothing of how this blinkered, emasculated underworld came to be is revealed to us. Lucas would go on to create a pop-culture, mass appeal phenomenon with Star Wars, but THX 1138 was a powerful and disturbing metaphor for the coerced consumerism of the sixties and the overbearing concept a Big Brother society that trusted no-one on the outside, but its own people even less. Thus, using real locations in San Francisco and Los Angeles, and garnering a fabulous cast headed-up by Robert Duvall and Donald Pleasance, he and his college conglomerate of technicians and crew revved-up their creative engines and produced one of the pivotal science fiction films of the seventies.Īlthough Lucas, by his own admission (at least as much as ours), is not a good writer, he is still a master storyteller and this tale of a nightmarish, robot controlled future for a mankind expunged of all emotion and permanently drugged-up into a state of blind, senseless conformity, was a lightning bolt of intellectual and visual accusation to an establishment that many saw as headed towards the ultra-right-wing. But with critical acclaim for his earlier short – then entitled THX 113 EB, but telling roughly the same story – and the innate hunger of a raw new talent, Lucas' enthusiasm and unbridled imagination seem to know no bounds. Made in 1970 with the stalwart backing of his friend and fellow beard-fanatic, Francis Ford Coppola, THX 1138 was a mini-budgeted art-house SF parable – not the most bankable sort of production to get off the ground. But before young Skywalker broke the bonds of Tatooine and sought the liberation of a crusade that meant something, the similarly young filmmaker broke a few bonds of his own and, in so doing, tore down the walls between the cinematic, the cerebral and the downright fantastic with a dazzling feature-length version of his own experimental college film. With Star Wars, George Lucas went for the myth, and, for better or worse, he has pretty much stuck with that. “Thou art a subject of the divine, created in the image of man, by the masses, for the masses.” It bases its objective on profit maximization. Price differentiation is a special power that a monopoly enjoys. A simple monopoly operates in a single market with a single price, unlike a discriminating monopoly that operates in more than one market.Įxamples: water supply, railway services 2. Here, a simple monopoly firm charges a uniform price for its products when selling to all its buyers. This is one of the monopoly markets structures. Let’s explore these monopoly structures separately as follows.ĭifferent types of monopolies 1. Hence, a monopolist treats all consumers in an equal way and charges a uniform price for the product. Since there are many buyers and one seller, no one can influence the price.Unlike in competitive market where there is a separate industry and many firms, monopoly has only one firm which is the price-maker and not price taker. There is only one seller in this market and its products are homogeneous. This characteristic creates different monopoly structures like pure monopoly and imperfect monopoly. This product has no close substitutes either. In monopoly, both producer and Apart from that, monopoly producer does not real information to another party.Monopoly differs from these structures especially due to its outstanding and absolute market power. Monopoly is one of the market structures among other markets like perfect competition, monopolistic competition and oligopoly. The general characteristics of all the monopoly types are as follows. Further, imperfect information is a prominent feature in this market. Hence, there are barriers for a new producer to enter the market. Therefore, both the industry and firm in this market is one. The monopolist earns normal profit when average cost curve is tangential to the average revenue at this level of output.Do you want to know the different types of monopolies? There are seven types of monopoly market structures namely simple monopoly and discriminating monopoly, natural monopoly, legal monopoly, pure monopoly, imperfect monopoly, industrial monopolies or public monopolies.Ī monopoly is a market situation where there is only one seller of products. The equality of marginal cost and marginal revenue at point b determines the quality Q1 which is sold at price A. The monopolist realizes excess profit which is equal to the shaded portion PBCD.Ī monopolist can also make normal profit. He is able to cover both the average cost and marginal cost. At the point of equilibrium quantity produced is OQ1 which the price is OP. In figure below, the monopolist is at equilibrium at point S where MC=MR and MC cut MR from below. The slope of MC is greater than the slope of MR at the point of intersection. Marginal cost cuts marginal revenue from below. The marginal cost is equal to marginal (MC=MR).In the short run, a monopolist will be at equilibrium if the following conditions are fulfilled. The monopolist can earn abnormal profit, both in the short run and long run. The most profitable output is where MC=MR. The demand curve facing the monopolist is downward sloping because the firm is also the industry. To fix output to be produced and allow the price to be determined by the demand. To fix price and leave the output to be determined by the demand.Restriction of output, and scarcity of product. Profiteering and exploitation of consumers.Economies of scale due to greater efficient and full utilization of productive resources.Patent law: This law confers on a firm special privilege to protect its new invention and it tends to scare away other competitors.Technological monopoly: This is a monopoly which arises as a result of technological development.Voluntary monopoly: This type of monopoly is formed when firms willingly merge or combine.

TV Guide noted that “there are signs that Stranger Things is on the verge of slowing down,” while the AV Club wondered if the show would have the confidence to “grow up” going forward. However, even the positive reviews did question the show’s ability to stay afloat for much longer. USA Today called the new episodes, “exuberant and excellent, nearly surpassing the creative heights of the first season and providing a path to keeping things strange for years to come.” GameSpot‘s glowing review highlighted the Duffer brothers’ work, noting that “after a lackluster sophomore slump, Stranger Things is back at the top of its game.” Consequence of Sound called the new season “peak blockbuster television,” while Metro said it “has a lot to offer and it delivers in nearly everything it has promised us over the past year-and-a-half.” The review embargo lifted on Stranger Things 3 today and they’re mostly positive! The show is currently sitting at a 92 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics noting its clear improvement over season 2, while questioning its longevity. Reviews for the second season were mostly mixed, with some criticizing the show’s occasional departure into confounding new storylines, but lucky for fans, it sounds like they won’t have to worry about that this time around. We’ve had a few awesome trailer, some tie-in commercials, and other carefully deployed Easter egg teases leading up to the show’s return, but we had no idea–until now–if the new episodes would be any good. The third season of Stranger Things drops on Netflix later this week, a summer extravaganza that’s sure to get the internet buzzing. If the presumed click exceeds that size, the program stops, displays the waveform, and asks you to decide if it is click or music (clicking Accept then makes the repair, while hitting the return key skips to the next click). ClickRepair has a programmable detection threshold, and lets you have automatic repairs done to clicks up to a specified duration or number of consecutive samples. For me it is the only sonically transparent tool that still allows a reasonably fast workflow. The solution I finally settled for (after started the development of my own click detection and repair algorithms in Matlab!) is a semi-automatic method using ClickRepair.ĬlickRepair is a shareware application for PC and Mac, written and maintained by Australian retired mathematics professor Brian Davies. In my experience, and I test-drove a lot of them, none do their job without significant damage to the sound. Some of these tools work reasonably well. There exists software that does the job fully automatically, such as the declicker in Audition. A valid method, but soooo tedious and long-winded as to be impossible. The safest option is to do it manually: play the track in an audio editor, stop when a click is heard, zoom in on the waveform, and manually reduce the click's amplitude or simply cut it out. In fact it never made any previously-cleaned record sound any better at all!ĭigital click removal then. And yes, I've always treated them well and kept them clean, graduating through several record cleaning methods including B&O, Knowin/Knosti, Allsop, and since 2004 a Nitty Gritty RCM, and no, not even the RCM is a panacea. Half of my record collection is second-hand, but even the LPs I bought new all too often are marred by clicks and pops. But my stance is that it would be a shame not to remove at least the worst offenders, now that it is actually feasible to do so. After all, they are a fact of life in this game. I know that many people find vinyl clicks and pops virtually innocuous. Once each album side has been recorded as one 88.2/96kHz and 24 bit file my first processing step is click removal.
